Ruhnu Island is the calmest and kindest place in the Baltic Sea, the most sparsely populated island in Estonia. At the highest point of the island, on Haubjerre Hill, stands a lighthouse designed by the famous engineer Gustav Eiffel. It was manufactured in France and erected in 1877 to replace an old wooden structure. The lighthouse has a metal structure with four supporting pillars, and a spiral staircase leads up to it. Today, it is the only surviving lighthouse of its kind in the Baltic Sea region. Here are two churches, one of which is a stone church and the other is the oldest wooden building in Estonia from 1644.
