Difference between Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore license
Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore certificate limitations
The Yachtmaster Coastal IYT is a recreational certificate of competency for command of vessels up to 24 m in length up to 60 nm offshore in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Yachtmaster Offshore license holder has the right to command of a vessel up to a maximum 24 meters, up to 150 nautical miles from the coast, day or night, any weather.
Yachtmaster coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore requirements:
The Candidate for Yachtmaster Coastal course:
-800 nautical miles,
-25 days on board at sea (2 days at least as captain),
-12 hours on watch at night.
The Candidate for Yachtmaster Offshore:
– 3000 nautical miles
– 50 days on board at sea (a day = 24 hours)
– 30 hours on watch at night underway.
Duration and content of sailing courses:
Yachtmaster Coastal course must attend a 7-day practice and theory (40 hrs) on board a yacht with practical assessment and written examination.
Yachtmaster Offshore course:
11 days comprehensive high-level course:
6-day Yachtmaster Offshore theory – high-level shore-based module with several assessment papers and written examinations incorporating subjects including navigation, tidal calculations, COLREG, meteorology, buoyage, safety, passage planning, and general ship knowledge.
5-day practical course. To the end of the course, you should demonstrate seamanship skills such as boat handling, docking, navigation, and passage planning.
